Slovak Filmmakers Launch Sharp Political Criticism at Film Awards Ceremony

Share:

Prominent Slovak filmmakers used their acceptance speeches at a major film awards ceremony to deliver harsh criticism of current government policies and officials. The criticism targeted Culture Minister Martina Šimkovičová and included condemnation of homophobic attitudes, personnel purges at the Fund for the Support of Arts, and Slovakia's stance on the war in Ukraine. The head of the Film Professionals Union, Oľha, faced particularly pointed criticism from his own daughter during the event. The awards ceremony became a platform for the film industry to voice opposition to what they view as harmful cultural and political developments under the current government.
