How Dávka Works

Dávka checks articles published from numerous Slovak news sources, compiles related stories together, generates a summary of each story, and then translates everything to English. We do our best to remove duplicate stories, but this is a continuing work in progress.

Stories on category pages are sorted simply by publish date/time, newest to oldest. The main page is sorted by a calculated importance score, with added functionality to vary the topic categories, giving readers a good sense of the breadth of news and what is important in Slovakia.

What is the Importance Score?

The importance score determines how prominently a story appears on the main page. It is calculated using several factors:

  • Base score: Every story starts with 10 points
  • Multiple sources: +10 points for each additional news source covering the same story
  • Breaking/urgent news: +20 points for stories with urgent keywords (accidents, emergencies, deaths)
  • Exclusive content: +15 points for stories marked as exclusive by the source
  • Political/corruption topics: +15 points for stories involving key political figures or corruption
  • AI significance rating: 0-45 bonus points based on our AI assessment of story significance to the Slovak public

This means a major political story covered by multiple sources with breaking news elements can score significantly higher than a routine local update, ensuring the most newsworthy content rises to the top.
