Archaeological excavation near Stupava suggests Šibenisko was historic execution site
Share:
Archaeological research near the western Slovak town of Stupava has uncovered evidence suggesting that a site known locally as Šibenisko served as a historic execution ground. The excavation appears to have confirmed local historical knowledge about the area, which has long been associated with its grim past through its name - Šibenisko derives from the Slovak word for gallows. Stupava, located near Bratislava close to the Austrian border, has been inhabited for centuries, and the discovery adds archaeological evidence to what was previously known through local tradition and place names about the area's role in medieval or early modern justice systems.
