Slovak Prime Minister Fico Cancels Kyiv Visit, May Travel to Moscow Instead

Share:

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has decided not to proceed with a planned visit to Ukraine's capital Kyiv, according to reports from Slovak media. Instead, Fico may be considering a trip to Moscow, marking a significant shift in his diplomatic priorities. The decision reflects Slovakia's evolving foreign policy approach under Fico's leadership, who has previously expressed skepticism about continued military aid to Ukraine and has called for peace negotiations with Russia. Fico, who leads the social-democratic Smer-SD party that returned to power in October 2023, has positioned Slovakia as more neutral in the Ukraine conflict compared to other EU and NATO allies. A potential Moscow visit would align with his stated preference for diplomatic engagement with Russia, despite international sanctions and widespread European opposition to such high-level contacts with the Kremlin.
