Slovakia Parts Ways with Football Coach Francesco Calzona After Four-Year Tenure

Share:

Francesco Calzona has ended his tenure as Slovakia's national football team coach after nearly four years in charge. The 57-year-old Italian, who took over in August 2022, compiled a record of 19 wins, 8 draws, and 13 losses during his time with the team. The Slovak Football Association (SFZ) attempted to extend Calzona's contract and approached him about continuing, but the coach presented specific conditions for remaining in the position. His departure follows a period marked by notable improvements in the team's playing style, though his tenure also included media controversies and disputes with the Weiss family, a prominent footballing dynasty in Slovakia. The association is now expected to begin searching for a new coach to lead the national team forward.
