Russia Launches Largest Attack on Ukraine's Transcarpathia Region, Uzhhorod Hit, Border with Slovakia Closed

Russia conducted its most massive attack to date on Ukraine's Transcarpathia region, striking the regional capital of Uzhhorod among other targets. The assault has prompted authorities to close the border between Ukraine and Slovakia as security measures are implemented. Transcarpathia, known as Zakarpattia in Ukrainian, borders Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Poland, making it strategically significant as a transit route for aid and refugees since Russia's invasion began. The region had previously experienced relatively fewer attacks compared to other parts of Ukraine, making this escalation particularly concerning for neighboring countries including Slovakia, which shares a 98-kilometer border with the area.
