Ground squirrels are flourishing on the Muránska Plateau in central Slovakia as they begin emerging from their winter hibernation period. The European ground squirrel, a protected species in Slovakia, maintains populations at approximately 80 locations across the country. The Muránska Plateau, a protected landscape area known for its unique karst formations and biodiversity, provides suitable habitat conditions for these small mammals that play an important role in maintaining grassland ecosystems.
