Former Russian Defense Minister Aide Charged with Embezzling Military Funds
Russian prosecutors have charged a close associate of former Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu with embezzling funds from the Russian military. The charges are part of a broader investigation into corruption within Russia's defense establishment. Among the assets the state seeks to confiscate is a luxury 1,800-square-meter mansion with two garages and a guardhouse in the elite Razdory-2 district near Moscow. The case adds to growing questions about President Vladimir Putin's tolerance for corruption among high-ranking officials, particularly those once considered part of his inner circle. Shoigu served as Russia's defense minister from 2012 until May 2024, overseeing the military during Russia's invasion of Ukraine before being reassigned to head the Security Council.
