Early Parkinson's Symptoms May Begin Decades Before Tremors, Slovak Neurologist Warns
Parkinson's disease may begin developing up to 20 years before the characteristic hand tremors appear, according to Matej Škorvánek, a neurologist and professor at a Slovak university. Early symptoms can include loss of smell and movements during sleep, making early detection challenging. Škorvánek emphasized that active physical movement is currently the only known method to slow the progression of Parkinson's disease. The neurologist noted that certain regions of Slovakia show higher rates of neurodegenerative diseases due to human industrial activity, particularly around Detva and Poltár where heavy industry was present, as well as in southeastern Slovakia. The connection between environmental factors and neurological disorders highlights growing concerns about the long-term health impacts of industrial pollution on local populations.
