Documentary Explores Post-War Jewish Exodus from Slovakia Under Communist Rule
A new documentary by director Kojnok examines the departure of Jewish communities from Slovakia, extending beyond the well-documented persecution during the wartime Slovak State to explore how Communist policies also contributed to Jewish emigration. The film focuses on Hlohovec, a Slovak town, highlighting the story of its last remaining Jewish resident. While the wartime Slovak State, a Nazi puppet regime that existed from 1939-1945, forms the foundation of the narrative, the documentary reveals that the post-war Communist government's policies also played a significant role in driving Jewish families to leave Slovakia. The documentary challenges the common narrative that attributes Jewish emigration solely to fascist persecution, instead showing how both totalitarian regimes contributed to the dissolution of Slovakia's Jewish communities.
