Slovakia's Human Rights Ombudsman Challenges Košice Amendment at Constitutional Court

Share:

Slovakia's Public Defender of Rights has filed a petition with the Constitutional Court challenging a recent legislative amendment concerning Košice, the country's second-largest city. The ombudsman is requesting that the court suspend the amendment, citing violations of Slovakia's constitution and international legal obligations. The Public Defender of Rights serves as Slovakia's human rights ombudsman, an independent institution that monitors compliance with fundamental rights and freedoms. The Constitutional Court, which serves as the country's highest authority on constitutional matters, will now review whether the Košice-related legislation conflicts with Slovakia's basic law and international agreements to which the country is a party.
