An artificial island built during the Cold War near the German Baltic Sea resort of Rügen has been sold at auction to an Austrian company. The McCube construction company, which specializes in modular housing, won the bidding for the small island with a starting price of 39,000 euros. The military installation was originally constructed by East German armed forces in the 1950s as part of the country's coastal defense system during the height of Cold War tensions.
