Slovak Opposition MP Warns Coalition Plans to Undermine Future Government
Mária Kolíková, a former justice minister and opposition lawmaker from the liberal Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party, accused Slovakia's ruling coalition of preparing constitutional changes designed to undermine any future opposition government. The MP claims proposed amendments to criminal procedure laws and the constitution could seriously hamper the prosecution of criminals while providing the current coalition parties with tools to bring down a future government led by today's opposition. Kolíková has also proposed establishing a second parliamentary chamber similar to the Czech Senate. She recently had an incident with Adam Lučanský, an MP from the nationalist Slovak National Party (SNS), who allegedly nearly pushed her down stairs, and says she faces threats and disinformation campaigns targeting her personally. The accusations highlight growing tensions between Slovakia's current ruling coalition, led by the populist Smer-SD party, and the opposition as they battle over judicial reforms and constitutional changes that could affect the country's democratic institutions and rule of law.
