Kenya's Sebastian Sawe Breaks Marathon World Record in London, Running First Sub-2-Hour Official Time

Share:

Kenyan runner Sebastian Sawe made history on Sunday at the London Marathon by becoming the first person to officially complete a marathon in under two hours during a regular competition, finishing in 1 hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds. Ethiopian runner Yomif Kejelcha crossed the finish line just 11 seconds later, also breaking the two-hour barrier that has long been considered the sport's ultimate milestone. Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo finished third in 2:00:28, while the three fastest women all broke the 2:16 barrier in what organizers called the greatest day in marathon history. Sawe had anticipated his record-breaking performance and proactively ordered 25 doping tests to ensure the credibility of his achievement, demonstrating his commitment to clean competition in a sport that has faced scrutiny over performance-enhancing drugs.
