Slovak Economist Marks 250th Anniversary of Adam Smith's 'Wealth of Nations'
A Slovak economist has written a commentary marking the 250th anniversary of the publication of Adam Smith's influential work 'The Wealth of Nations.' The economist, who works at the University of Milan, reflected on Smith's enduring legacy and his famous concept of spontaneous order arising from individuals pursuing their own interests. Smith's work introduced the well-known example of a baker who bakes bread not out of altruism but from self-interest, illustrating how individual actions can benefit society as a whole. The economist suggests that while Smith's fundamental insights remain relevant, the simple economics of the baker example may no longer be sufficient to address today's complex economic challenges, arguing that Smith himself would be the first to acknowledge this evolution.
