Mexico City Sinking at Alarming Rate Due to Groundwater Depletion, Visible from Space

Share:

Mexico City is sinking at a dramatic rate due to extensive groundwater pumping and urban development that has severely depleted the underground water-bearing layer beneath the capital. The subsidence has been ongoing for more than 100 years and has become so pronounced that it can now be observed from space satellites. The combination of massive groundwater extraction to supply the sprawling metropolis and rapid urban expansion has caused the aquifer system to compress, leading to the gradual collapse of the city's foundation.
