The Divadelná Nitra theatre festival, Slovakia's oldest international theatre event, is struggling to survive after receiving no state funding for the upcoming edition. Anna Šimončičová, the festival's director, announced that organizers must raise 150,000 euros within one month to stage even a reduced version of the festival. The 35-year-old event, which traditionally showcases international theatre productions, now faces an existential crisis despite its long-standing cultural significance. The funding shortfall threatens the continuation of what has been a cornerstone of Slovakia's cultural calendar, highlighting broader challenges in state support for the arts sector.
