Slovak-Hungarian Relations Strain Over Territorial References and Historical Disputes

Share:

Tensions have emerged between Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Hungarian officials over the use of territorial terminology and unresolved historical issues. The dispute centers on Hungary's use of "Felvidék," a Hungarian term for Slovakia's southern regions that Hungarians consider historically significant. Tomáš Strážay from the Slovak Society for Foreign Policy notes that while the term is commonly used in Hungarian, it should be avoided in international relations and political discourse when the other party objects to it. The disagreement reflects broader tensions between Fico and Hungary regarding what Slovakia views as "Hungarian lands" within its territory and the legacy of the Beneš Decrees, post-World War II measures that expelled ethnic Germans and Hungarians from Czechoslovakia. Strážay argues these sensitive historical and territorial issues should be addressed through expert joint commissions rather than political statements that unnecessarily provoke tensions between the neighboring countries.
