Košice City and Waste Management Company Consider Introducing Weight-Based Waste Collection System
The city of Košice and waste management company KOSIT are considering implementing a weight-based waste collection system that would charge residents based on the amount of garbage they produce. The proposed system could potentially expand so-called "waste tourism," where residents dispose of their garbage in other municipalities to avoid higher fees. Košice, Slovakia's second-largest city and the main urban center of the eastern region, would be among the first major Slovak cities to adopt such a system if the proposal moves forward. Weight-based waste collection systems are designed to encourage recycling and waste reduction by making residents pay more for producing larger amounts of non-recyclable waste, though they can create incentives for residents to dump garbage in neighboring areas with different collection systems.
