Younger headed the spy agency during a crucial six-year period that included Britain's Brexit referendum and subsequent departure from the European Union, as well as heightened tensions with Russia following incidents such as the Salisbury nerve agent attack. MI6, formally known as the Secret Intelligence Service, is responsible for gathering foreign intelligence and conducting covert operations outside the United Kingdom.
