Edgar Allan Poe published what he called a "tale of ratiocination" in a magazine 185 years ago, introducing a literary detective character that preceded famous fictional investigators Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot. The American author's contribution to the magazine represented an early example of the detective fiction genre that would later be popularized by Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie. Poe's work established foundational elements of detective literature, featuring logical deduction and analytical reasoning that would become hallmarks of the genre.
