Russian Return to Hockey World Championship Becomes More Realistic as International Federation Lifts Blanket Ban
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has lifted its blanket ban on Russian and Belarusian participation in international tournaments for the 2026/27 season, making their return to world championships more realistic. Russian and Belarusian hockey players have been excluded from international tournaments since 2022 following Russia's military invasion of Ukraine, with the IIHF annually extending the ban for "security reasons." However, at the end of the recent world championships, the federation changed its approach, announcing it will evaluate potential Russian and Belarusian participation on a case-by-case basis rather than maintaining an automatic exclusion. The Slovak Hockey Federation has indicated it respects this decision, while Finnish and Czech federations have rejected the possibility of Russian participation. The policy shift represents a significant development in international hockey's response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, potentially opening the door for Russian and Belarusian players to return to major tournaments after a four-year absence.
