International Hockey Championship Still Played on Wider European Ice Despite Unification Calls
The International Ice Hockey Federation continues to use European-sized rinks at world championships despite calls for global standardization of ice dimensions. In early 2019, then-IIHF President René Fasel suggested unifying rink sizes worldwide, which would have represented a major change for the sport. European rinks, sometimes mockingly called "airports" compared to NHL standards, measure a maximum of 60 meters long and 30 meters wide, while North American rinks are approximately 61 meters long but significantly narrower. The size difference affects playing style, with wider ice allowing for more skating room and different tactical approaches. NHL star Sidney Crosby has noted the adjustment required when switching between rink sizes, explaining that he needs to take four steps on wider ice where he would normally take two on North American rinks.
