Slovak NHL Player Fehérváry Sets Unnoticed Record for Blocked Shots

Slovak defenseman Martin Fehérváry quietly broke a national record in the NHL, blocking his 167th shot of the season during a game against Buffalo when hit by a Tage Thompson shot. The Washington Capitals player has now blocked more shots in a single NHL season than any Slovak player before him, at least dating back to the 2005-06 season. The milestone went largely unnoticed, likely even by Fehérváry himself, highlighting one of hockey's less celebrated but physically demanding statistics. Shot blocking requires players to throw themselves in front of hard rubber pucks traveling at high speeds, making it one of the sport's most painful defensive tactics.
