Opposition Party Proposes Referendum Quorum Changes

Share:

The opposition Slovensko movement has proposed changes to the quorum requirements for referendums, citing the practical dysfunction of the referendum system under current conditions. The party, led by Igor Matovič and currently part of Slovakia's parliamentary opposition, argues that existing rules make referendums effectively non-functional as a tool of direct democracy. The proposal comes as Slovakia's referendum mechanism has faced criticism for being difficult to successfully execute due to high participation thresholds that must be met for results to be binding.
