Slovak Publisher Discusses Changing Role of Women in Literature
Share:
Slovak publisher Ostrihoňová says women in literature have historically been portrayed as decorative rather than fully realized characters, with female experiences often marginalized or aestheticized while male protagonists represented universal humanity. Women characters were frequently forced into templates created by others, she noted. However, contemporary authors and readers are now seeking authenticity and raw truth about female physicality in books, including previously taboo topics like menstruation, aging, and illness. This shift represents a broader movement away from restrictive gender roles in literary representation toward more genuine portrayals of women's experiences.
