Slovak Runner Hladík Wins First Bratislava Marathon After Dramatic Race

Share:

Slovak distance runner Marek Hladík won the Bratislava Marathon on Sunday for the first time in his career after a dramatic race that left him with no memory of the final stretch due to extreme exhaustion. Despite being one of Slovakia's top endurance athletes and a two-time national marathon champion who has also won the marathon in Košice, victory in his home city of Bratislava had previously eluded him. Hladík finished second in the two previous editions of the race and appeared headed for another runner-up finish on Sunday after losing the lead around the 25-kilometer mark. The victory represents a significant achievement for the accomplished runner, though he cautioned that extreme exhaustion should not be the goal in marathon running.
