Slovak Healthcare System Dominated by Private Interests Over Patients, Opposition MP Claims
Slovakia's healthcare system prioritizes private business interests over patient care, with prominent businessmen Jaroslav Chrenek and Ján Haščák wielding more influence than Prime Minister Robert Fico, according to opposition politician Tomáš Szalay. The Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party MP criticized the system as plagued by corruption scandals, aggressive lobbying, chronic waste of resources, and disregard for state audit recommendations. Szalay argued that while profit in healthcare is not inherently problematic, the Slovak state has failed in its regulatory role by lacking coherent public policies and measurable objectives for the sector. The criticism highlights ongoing concerns about the balance between private enterprise and public interest in Slovakia's healthcare system.
