Slovak Actor Denounces 'Cultural Genocide' Under Current Government
Prominent Slovak actor Štefan Skrúcaný has condemned what he calls a "cultural genocide" taking place in Slovakia, describing the current situation as a "revolt of the mediocre and below-average." The veteran performer expressed disillusionment with the country's political trajectory, recalling how he had hoped for better times in the 1990s following the departure of Vladimír Mečiar's government, which he referred to using the derogatory term "grannies of democracy." However, Skrúcaný argued that Slovakia continues to produce new generations of similar political figures. Mečiar served as Slovakia's prime minister during much of the 1990s and was widely criticized for authoritarian tendencies and isolating Slovakia from Western integration efforts before losing power in 1998.
