Poland introduces bottle deposit system with potential tax implications

Share:

Poland has implemented a deposit system for plastic bottles and metal cans since October 2025, requiring a 50-groszy deposit (approximately 0.12 euros) on plastic bottles up to three liters and metal cans up to one liter. The Polish government is now considering whether income from returning these bottles and cans should be subject to taxation. The deposit system is designed to encourage recycling and reduce waste by providing consumers with a financial incentive to return containers to collection points.
