Košice to Lose 22 Municipal Districts Under New Law as Legal Challenge Looms

Share:

Slovakia's second-largest city Košice faces a major administrative reorganization that will eliminate 22 of its municipal districts under a newly approved law. The Public Defender of Rights Róbert Dobrovodský has announced plans to challenge the Law on the City of Košice at the Constitutional Court if President Zuzana Čaputová signs the legislation. Košice, home to 230,000 residents, currently operates under a unique administrative structure with multiple municipal districts that provide local services and governance. The proposed changes would fundamentally alter how local government functions in Slovakia's eastern metropolis, consolidating administrative powers and potentially affecting how citizens access municipal services.
