Slovak President Signs Amendment Allowing Košice Citizens to Vote on City Districts Reform
Slovak President Peter Pellegrini has signed an amendment to legislation governing Košice, the country's second-largest city, that would allow residents to decide the future structure of their city through a referendum. The referendum would give citizens the opportunity to vote on an alternative model for the territorial division of Košice, which would be prepared by the city government in cooperation with city councilors and district mayors. If approved, the referendum could be held alongside parliamentary elections in 2027. If the referendum fails or does not take place, Košice would retain its current structure of four city districts. The amendment represents a significant step in allowing local residents to directly influence major administrative changes to their city's governance structure.
