Košice Faces Growing Problem of Advertising Clutter Throughout Historic City

Share:

Košice, Slovakia's second-largest city and a UNESCO World Heritage site in eastern Slovakia, is experiencing an increasing proliferation of outdoor advertising that residents say is degrading the historic city's visual environment. Billboards, advertising signs, banners, and improvised commercial displays are multiplying at city entrances, along main thoroughfares, and even in residential areas. Many of these advertisements are old, damaged, or aesthetically inappropriate, with some installed without proper municipal permits. The growing "advertising smog" is drawing criticism from residents who say it detracts from the medieval city center's unique atmosphere and historic character, prompting calls for municipal authorities to take stronger regulatory action against unauthorized and unsightly commercial signage.
