Slovak Catholic Church Reflects on Post-Vatican II Liturgical Changes and Language Reform

Share:

A Slovak Catholic parish experienced significant liturgical changes in 1969 when the altar was turned around and a new Mass order in Slovak was introduced, reflecting the broader post-Vatican II reforms in the Catholic Church. The parish priest distributed machine-typed copies of the new liturgy in postcard format a year before its official publication by the Society of St. Vojtech, Slovakia's Catholic publishing house. While parishioners could not fully understand the theological implications of the liturgical changes, the introduction of Slovak language in worship significantly strengthened their attachment to the Church. The changes represented a major shift from Latin liturgy to vernacular language, making religious services more accessible to Slovak worshippers during a period when the Catholic Church was implementing worldwide reforms following the Second Vatican Council of the 1960s.
